Cohesion and Coherence: An Analysis of the Students’ Narrative Writings

چکیده

The research was conducted to analyze cohesion and coherence used on 20 student’s narrative writing in SMAN 4 Praya. Descriptive qualitative method this by collecting data from students assignments. Then, classifying the findings using theory introduced Halliday Hasan (1976). results obtained were: (a) grammatical cohesion; reference 61.09%, substitution 13.53%, ellipsis 04.88%, conjunction 26.50%; 2) lexical repetition 72%, synonym 18%, collocation 10%. (b) students’ produced of narratives; development themes generic structure. shows that were able organize their ideas cohesively coherently. It is evident ability sufficiently developed devices.
